Jute is a long, soft, shiny plant fibre that can be spun into coarse, strong threads. It is produced from plants in the genus Corchorus. Jute is second only to cotton, in amount produced and its variety of uses. Jute fibres are composed primarily of the plant materials cellulose and lignin.

Jute is a rainy season crop, growing best in warm, humid climates. The world's finest Jute is produced in the Bengal Delta Plain, mostly in Bangladesh & India.
